DESCRIPTION

Discover the best of Morocco's magical Atlas Mountains on this two-day climb of North Africa's highest mountain, Mount Toubkal (4167 m). This trek will allow you to appreciate panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It is customizable if you opt for a less physically demanding excursion and stay in the Imlil Valley.

Day 1: Marrakech - imlil (1700m) – Toubkal Refuge (3200m)

Pick up from your hotel in Marrakech. After a transfer to the little village of Imlil, you will start your trek with your dedicated mountain guide and team. Heading along the Mizane Valley, we first pass the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. You then continue east, and by crossing the flood plains, your route takes you along mule tracks and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river you eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the refuge (3206m). Here you will spend the night. About 5 to 6 hours walking.

Day 2: Toubkal Refuge – Toubkal ascension (4167m) – Imlil – Marrakech

Early in the morning you make your attempt on the summit of Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Your route takes you up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. When you reach the summit you will see that the vistas across the surrounding landscape are quite breathtaking. From here there are unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. You will retrace your steps when you return down the mountain and head back towards Imlil. Transfer back to Marrakech. About 9 to 10 hours walking.

Recap of the day

IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOU GO

Trekking to the summit of Mount Toubkal is a real mountain adventure, not just a casual hike. If you’re up for the challenge, make sure you’re in good physical condition. The climb is demanding, but the reward is worth every step—breathtaking views, a deep sense of achievement, and an unforgettable experience in Morocco’s High Atlas. Be prepared: this isn’t a stroll in the park.

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR TREK

To make the most of your journey, come well-equipped:

Hydration & Energy: Carry plenty of water and energy-boosting snacks to keep your strength up.

Sun Protection: There’s little shade on the trail, so bring a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses. Lip balm and moisturizer will help protect against the dry mountain air.

Clothing for All Conditions: Wear light, breathable clothing with long sleeves and pants to shield yourself from the sun. Pack warmer layers for chilly mornings and evenings.

Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip are essential—the terrain is rocky and uneven.

Note that you can rent equipment in our village, before departure. Ready to take on the challenge? 🚶‍♂️🏔️
