Morocco has five hikes for all styles, from leisurely walks to sporty treks.

Morocco is a dream destination for hikers. With over ten peaks reaching more than 4000 meters, a diverse range of landscapes, and extensive experience in guiding, it offers hikes for all styles, from leisurely strolls to sporty treks. Here are five hikes for all styles.

1. The Most Iconic Hike: Toubkal Summit

Imagine yourself in the heart of the 38,000-hectare national park, 70 km south of Marrakech. At 4167 meters, Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa, attracting both novices and athletes seeking a challenge. The starting point for the two—or three-day hikes is Imlil, often referred to as the "Chamonix of Morocco."

However, for a more varied experience, it's ideal to plan a week-long loop in the region, immersing yourself in the beauty and serenity of this unique landscape. Before starting the ascent, you will encounter panoramic views, clusters of villages under walnut trees, and mountain lakes. After a night in a bivouac or one of the refuges at 3207 meters, you tackle the 900-meter climb on a steep but manageable path. The sunrise casts a red glow on the black rocks, and after three hours of walking, the 360° view from the summit is spectacular.

  • Season: The hiking season runs mainly from June to October. However, you can still visit in winter, as the peaks can be snow-covered until May.

  • Difficulty: The difficulty level ranges from 3 to 4, depending on the route, and the ascent is 900 meters in one morning.

  • Tips: A guide is mandatory. Contact us to plan your tour. Good physical condition is essential, and it's crucial to descend to the refuges by late morning for safety reasons.

2. The Most Fragrant Hike: The Valley of Roses

In spring, the valley around Kelaa M'Gouna is filled with roses. This area is famous for cultivating rosa damascena, celebrated yearly in late April/early May. With 3200 tons in 2022, Morocco is the third-largest producer worldwide. Hikers will be accompanied by the fragrances and colours of roses as they follow the trails along the M'Goun River, enjoying the rustling of poplars and willows and the sounds of traditional irrigation channels.

  • Season: Mid-April to early May is the best time to see and smell the roses.

  • Difficulty: 1 to 2 with 300/500-meter ascents.

  • Tip: To avoid counterfeits, buy labelled rose products such as rose water, essential oil, or dried petals.

3. The Most Nomadic Hike: M'Goun Mountain

Known as "little Tibet," the M'Goun massif, located about 100 km north of Ouarzazate, offers some of the most exotic hikes in Morocco. Experienced trekkers might attempt the 4068-meter summit, with stops at impressive sites like Ikiss Arous pastures and Tarkeddite plateau. The ascent requires five hours of hiking along a narrow, often windy ridge, offering views over the massif and the southern expanses.

  • Season: May to October to avoid snow risks.

  • Difficulty: 3 with an average ascent of 500 to 800 meters per day at 3500/4000 meters.

4. The Most Family-Friendly Hike: The Aït Bougmez Valley

Six hours east of Marrakech, this serene valley, nestled between 1800 and 2200 meters, is known as the "happy valley." After winter, nature awakens, making it an ideal time for family hikes. The valley stretches nearly 30 km, offering a variety of walks or itinerant hikes.

Cultural Tip: Activities include tracking dinosaur footprints, climbing to the round communal granary of Sidi Moussa, or picking wildflowers, which provide a glimpse into the region's rich history and natural beauty.

  • Season: Accessible year-round, but best from late April to early November.

  • Difficulty: Varies by route, around 2 for hikes to nomadic plateaus or shepherd huts.

  • Tip: Be sure to catch the new M'Goun Geopark Museum in Azilal. It features exhibits of the universe's origins, evolution, and geology, including a giant Atlasaurus imelakei skeleton.

5. The Most Oceanic Hike: The Atlantic Coast to Essaouira

This hike features dunes, ocean waves, cliffs with waterfalls, and picturesque bays. Starting from Imssouane, 100 km south of Essaouira, you can hike along cliffs, dunes, and argan tree trails. Fishing villages offer delicious grilled fish and tea, while only the cries of migratory birds and the ocean's murmur break the silence.

  • Season: Year-round, trade winds cool the air from May to October.

  • Difficulty: Around 2 with less than 500 meters of ascent.

  • Tip: Preferably hike from north to south, starting at Sidi Kaouki when trade winds blow, allowing you to walk with the wind at your back. Swimming in the ocean is possible, but strong currents prevent swimming

6. Practical Guide to Hiking in Morocco

For the High Atlas hikes, Marrakech airport is the best-served and closest to the Toubkal region. Ouarzazate airport is convenient for southern hikes.

Good to Know:

  • Hiking alone in the Moroccan mountains is not recommended, as trails are not marked. A mountain guide is essential.

  • Multi-day hikes often involve mules (or camels on the Atlantic coast) for carrying luggage (and children) and a muleteer or camel driver who also acts as a cook.

  • Traditional lifestyles in the Berber mountains mean avoiding shorts and low-cut tops to respect locals and protect against the sun.

  • Hats, sunglasses, and scarves are essential.
